CALM Studies Funding project
The TCU CALM Studies group is seeking to raise money to support our group's programming, including a weekly meditation, meditation retreats, a podcast, the CALM Buddies program, and the CALM Convos program.
What Is CALM?
The CALM Studies group was founded by Andy Fort (TCU Religion Department) in 2012 as a way to offer the TCU community access to mindfulness, meditation, and other contemplative practices. During our ten-plus years on campus, we have hosted regular meditation sessions, meditation retreats, panels, film screenings, and other sorts of events. Initially known as the TCU Contemplative Studies group, we renamed ourselves in 2020 the CALM Studies group, which means “Compassionate Awareness and Living Mindfully.” We have four pillars: belonging, wisdom, compassion, and flourishing.
The calm story
CALM Studies has been offering contemplative practices for more than a decade to the community to help its members in practical ways; by, for instance, reducing stress and anxiety while increasing focus and a sense of connection. But those practices also undergird our commitment to identifying and working to alleviate the many sorts of suffering that exist in our shared world, whether caused by systemic racism, global warming, food insecurity, or by other social ills. In this way, our group is dedicated to helping the TCU community—whether students, staff, administrators, faculty, alumni, and others—realize our university's mission to serve as a values-based institution of higher learning aimed at promoting the greater good.
