Emeritus Dean and Professor of Biology Dr. Phil Hartman and his wife, Mary Beth, are longtime champions of TCU and the Louise Dilworth Davis College of Science & Engineering. This is their college-level TCU Gives Day challenge benefiting Davis College students, faculty and programs.
During his remarkable 40-year TCU career, Dr. Hartman served as a biology professor, led the Pre-Health Professions Program for 22 years, and served as dean of the Davis College of Science & Engineering for nine years. His leadership, teaching, research and commitment to mentoring generations of students earned him the Wassenich Award for Mentoring in the TCU Community, the Davis College Dean’s Research and Creative Activities Award and the Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Achievement as a Creative Teacher and Scholar.
As a scientist, educator, mentor and dean, Dr. Hartman understands the transformative impact that meaningful academic opportunities and dedicated faculty can have on students’ lives. His and Mary Beth’s gift to the Dr. Phil & Mary Beth Hartman Endowed Pre-Health Heritage Scholarship will help support future health professionals as they pursue their education at TCU.

Established by longtime TCU faculty member Dr. David Minter, the Dr. David Minter Enhancing Endowment for Chemistry & Biochemistry Research advances research and strengthens opportunities for students and faculty. This is one of two TCU Gives Day challenges benefiting the Davis College Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry.
Throughout his distinguished TCU career, Dr. Minter has been a devoted professor, researcher, mentor and champion of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. He has taught the department’s signature Organic Qualitative Analysis course since 1980, helping generations of students develop the analytical and problem-solving skills essential to careers in chemistry, biochemistry and the health professions. Dr. Minter’s commitment to students and excellence in teaching earned him recognition as the John V. Roach Honors College Professor of the Year in 1994, and he is a two-time winner of the Davis College of Science & Engineering Dean’s Teaching Award in 1995 and 2008.
The Dr. David Minter Enhancing Endowment for chemistry and biochemistry Research provides enduring support for the department’s research priorities, including advancing research productivity, creating opportunities for student and faculty research and enhancing graduate student stipends.

Dr. Bob Neilson Endowed Chemistry Programming Fund
Established by his wife, Dr. Patty Wisian Neilson, the Dr. Bob Neilson Endowed Chemistry Programming Fund celebrates Dr. Bob’s life and the lasting difference he made at TCU. This is one of two TCU Gives Day challenges benefiting the Davis College Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry.
During his distinguished 42-year tenure at TCU, Dr. Bob combined a successful research program with a passion for teaching, serving as a devoted faculty member and department chair. He challenged students and colleagues alike to think deeply and approach their work with unwavering fairness. Twenty-two Ph.D. students, four M.S. students, 18 postdoctoral researchers, and countless undergraduates participated in his TCU research, which produced more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. In 1995, he received the TCU Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Research and Creative Activity. Dr. Bob also taught general chemistry for decades to thousands of students, offering rigorous academic challenges and enduring life lessons.
The Dr. Bob Neilson Endowed Chemistry Programming Fund supports the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry’s highest priorities, including student and faculty learning, engagement and professional development, research and scholarly activities, laboratory enhancements and equipment, and emerging opportunities and strategic initiatives.
